The number of people suffering from obesity worldwide has increased considerably in the past thirty years, as a result of which almost a third of the world's population is now obese. The problem is global, but a recent survey shows that a number of countries have worrying figures.
In 1980, 857 million people were overweight, in 2013 there are already more than two billion. In 2010, between three and four million people died of complications due to overweight. "Obesity is a global problem that affects people of all ages and any income," says Christopher Murray of the University of Washington.

Because of the many desks and computer jobs many people would live a sedentary life and the range of high-calorie products, fast food, and soft drinks has also increased. 'As a result, we consume more calories than we consume. If no measures are taken, the obesity epidemic could lead to a public health crisis in the coming decades, "says Professor Murray.

Under Murray's leadership, a new study was conducted comparing 188 countries, with the aim of drawing up a top ten of countries where obesity rates are highest. This study was published in the medical newspaper 'The Lancet'. The United States is in the first place and has a population of which 33% of adults are overweight. That's about 78 million people. In China, there are 46 million obese people and in India 30 million inhabitants have to contend with obesity.
